Dendritic spikes and plasticity of entorhinal-CA1 and CA3-CA1 synapses

Several different methods have been used for inducing LTP and LTD in the hippocampus and cortex. Some of these bear some relationship to naturally occurring spike patterns, while others are more artificial but can be used as a simple model for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity. I will present data on the relative efficacy of inducing LTP using different activation patterns in hippocampal slices. A special emphasis will be placed on the requirements for dendritic excitability during LTP induction, as well as differences in the mechanisms for inducing LTP at entorhinal-CA1 versus CA3-CA1 synapses.
