The Neural Basis of Pitch Perception
Talk Abstract
We have independently manipulated the pitch, timbre and location of artificial vowel sounds and recorded the responses of neurons from 5 auditory cortical fields of the ferret. We find the encoding of these three sound attributes to be highly interdependent throughout cortex. Furthermore, neurometric functions produced from the neural responses to vowel sounds of varying pitches show that specialized “pitch” neurons may not be necessary to account for behavioral thresholds in this task.
