Talk Title
Wearable Acousto-Optic Brain Interface
Talk Abstract
Beam steering using acousto-optic deflectors proffers many advantages for scanning microscopy over the more common galvanometer-based or piezoelectric systems: three-dimensional scanning with no moving parts; intertialess random access in tens of microseconds, two orders of magnitude faster than most mechanical scanning systems; practically perfect repositioning accuracy when driven by digital signals; and beam intensity modulation built into the physical mechanism of deflection. I will present a simple way of shrinking a complete acousto-optic scanning microscope into a package fit for head-attached or handheld use. I will explain the details of our two hundred gram prototype and discuss what it will take to shrink it further, down to twenty grams or so. Special considerations required for successful deployment with two-photon excitation will be discussed at length. Intellectual property issues shall be addressed.
